Siewierz

This is what Kolberg wrote about the city of Siewierz, located in the Będzin district: “some time ago (that is, from 1443) the city was the capital of the Siewierz Duchy, which belonged to the bishops of Cracow. These men had the right to produce swords and mint coins, as well as to grant royal titles.

In the past there was a great bishops’ castle surrounded by water. Later, it was changed into a linen’s factory, but today it is in a state of ruin”.

It is unknown who was the host of Kolberg in Siewierz. Most of the collected materials have a common note related to the location: “from Siewierz (Mierzęcice)”. Among others he documented here a wedding ceremony from 1852.

Kolberg gave an account of the inhabitants of this area:

“On Holy Thursday, the farmers in the vicinity of Siewierz feed their cattle with a mixture of bread and droppings. They believe that this can protect the cattle from any sicknesses in the future. On Holy Friday, there is a tradition of taking a bath in the river. In the morning, just after awakening everyone from the house dashes out to the water”.

“In Siewierz and near Częstochowa, they maintain the same tradition as in Cracow, according to which on Fat Thursday, old women walk and dance on the market square and streets and ‘catch’ the passers-by”.

During his stay in Siewierz, Kolberg collected a decent amount of songs from Mierzęcice.
