The Complete Works vol. 35: The Przemyśl Region. From materials published posthumously by I. Kopernicki. Foreword by I. Kopernicki. Wrocław – Poznań 1964, pp. XX+244, illustrations. Photo-offset re-edition; first edition: Cracow 1891.
The ethnographic monograph of the surroundings of Przemyśl covers the Lesser Poland and Ruthenian border area along the middle part of the San River. Kolberg prepared it for publication in the final period of his life, but the editing was completed after his death by I. Kopernicki. Preparing Kolberg’s materials, Kopernicki selected field notes from his manuscript files (particularly rich from Iskań, Rakowa, Sanoczany and Wyszatyce) which come from the investigations conducted in the years 1861, 1863, 1883-1885. ‘The Przemyśl Region” contains almost exclusively materials from the domain of social culture (annual customs and family rites) and selected areas of folklore in the form of 348 songs and 14 tales. Furthermore, there are a few descriptions of costumes (with four illustrations of costumes and wedding accessories), food, and, at the end, there is a short chapter devoted to beliefs and medical practices. At the beginning there is The Indtroduction by I. Kopernicki in which he presents a biographical note on Kolberg and preliminary evaluation of his scientific contribution. Kolberg’s portrait is also included there.
