After leaving Warsaw in 1870, Kolberg was persuaded by his friend Józef Konopka to stay in Mogilany. Konopka was a landowner and an enthusiast of ethnography. He could afford to help Kolberg live a peaceful life. After a short staying in Mogilany Kolberg moved permanently to Modlnica.
