The Kielce Region

According to Kolberg, the Kielce region was a part of the Cracow region, so while describing the villagers of the former, he used the material related to the latter: “When a peasant comes back from the city, he seldom misses a tavern. It attracts him like a magnet that has stronger forces than the peasant’s willpower. Even horses, taught by the habits of their owners, call in at every tavern”.

Kolberg described his trip to the Kielce region: “Between 1852-56, we collected a detailed description of wedding rituals along with songs and music from different parts of this province, especially from the vicinity of Chmielnik, Szydłowiec, Stopnica, Wiślica, Koszyce, Szkalmierz, Miechów, Skała, Olkusz, Pilica, Ogrodzieniec, Siewierz and Będzin”. In 1851, he visited the monastery in Święty Krzyż located on the Łysa Góra [Bald Mountain].

Kielce


This is how Kolberg describes this city: "The capital of the province, Kielce is a clean city with a large market, good pavements and sidewalks laid with marble slabs, the material which is very popular in the neighbourhood.

Chmielnik


"The town of Chmielnik is known for a memorable defeat of the Poles at the time of Boleslaw the Chaste.

Miechów


"One of the patriarchs of Jerusalem, the one who gave great privileges for the church of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in Miechow, arrived to this town during the celebration of Easter.

Charzowice


In Chorzowice Kolberg collected many songs.

Łysa Góra / Św.Krzyż


In 1851 Kolberg went to ‘Święty Krzyż’ [Holy Cross monastery] situated on Łysa Góra [Bald Mountain].

Mierzęcice


It is unknown who was the host of Kolberg in the vicinity of Mierzęcice. Most of the collected materials from this region have a common note related to the location: “from Siewierz (Mierzęcice)”. Among other things, Kolberg documented here a wedding ceremony from 1852.

Ogrodzieniec


"Ogrodzieniec is a town next to Podzamcze. They are situated by the mountain on which there are the ruins of an old castle of the Firlejs and Bonars".

Siewierz


This is what Kolberg wrote about the city of Siewierz, located in the Będzin district: “some time ago (that is, from 1443) the city was the capital of the Siewierz Duchy, which belonged to the bishops of Cracow. These men had the right to produce swords and mint coins, as well as to grant royal titles
